My First Architectural Internship

In the summer semester of my first year at UC, I did an internship at Ankur & Sarvesh in India. This opportunity marked the beginning of my professional experience, allowing me to delve deeper into the field of architecture and gain valuable insights into its practical applications.

Embarking on my first-year internship at Ankur & Sarvesh firm in India during the summer of 2023, I found myself at the intersection of excitement and trepidation. The decision to utilize my summer break by gaining practical experience was motivated by a desire to learn and grow in the field of architecture. It was a full-time internship, offering a comprehensive immersion into the professional world.

Fresh into my first year, I was eager to dive headfirst into the practicalities of architecture, yet acutely aware of my lack of experience, particularly with the technical intricacies of the field. Armed with a willingness to learn and a thirst for knowledge, I entered the internship with an open mind, ready to confront challenges head-on and emerge stronger than before. Little did I know that this internship would not only sharpen my technical skills but also shape my understanding of teamwork, discipline, and collaboration.

As I sit down to reflect on my internship experience, a rush of memories floods my mind, accompanied by a myriad of emotions. Those three months were not just about learning technical skills or adhering to professional standards; they were about growth, self-discovery, and the forging of a path toward my future career. In this reflection, I aim to delve deep into the lessons learned, the challenges encountered, and the personal growth that emerged from this transformative experience.

Reflecting on those initial days, I vividly recall the mix of emotions coursing through me as I stepped into the office for the first time. While enthusiasm fueled my passion for architecture, a lingering sense of self-doubt gnawed at the edges of my confidence. I was a novice in a sea of seasoned professionals, grappling with software programs and concepts that were entirely foreign to me.

The bustling office environment, the hum of creativity in the air, and the camaraderie among colleagues—all contributed to an atmosphere teeming with energy and possibility. It was during these moments, amidst the hustle and bustle of daily tasks, that I gleaned invaluable insights into the importance of team bonding in fostering a culture of collaboration and growth. Indeed, my lack of familiarity with software tools such as AutoCAD and Adobe Photoshop posed a significant hurdle in the early stages of the internship. Yet, rather than succumbing to intimidation, I embraced the opportunity to learn and grow. Recognizing my status as a novice, I adopted a proactive approach, seeking guidance from mentors and asking questions whenever uncertainty arose. I quickly realized that asking for help was not a sign of weakness but rather a demonstration of my commitment to personal and professional development. Initially, it started with studying plans and following the instructions from my seniors. As I kept following, listening to my seniors, I gradually learned.

As the weeks unfolded, I found myself immersed in a whirlwind of tasks and responsibilities, each presenting its own set of challenges and learning opportunities. Despite my best efforts, mistakes were inevitable, particularly in those initial stages of acclimatization. However, what set me apart was not the absence of errors but rather my response to them. Instead of allowing setbacks to derail my progress, I embraced a mindset of continuous improvement, owning my mistakes and leveraging them as catalysts for growth.

Each misstep became a stepping stone towards refinement, as I reflected on the root causes of my errors and took proactive measures to prevent their recurrence. Whether it was through seeking feedback from supervisors or engaging in self-directed learning, I remained committed to the process of iterative refinement, knowing that each obstacle surmounted brought me one step closer to proficiency.

Moreover, the internship served as a crucible for the cultivation of resilience and adaptability. The fast-paced nature of the architecture industry demanded not only technical prowess but also the ability to navigate ambiguity and uncertainty with poise. There were moments of frustration and moments of doubt, but through it all, I remained steadfast in my determination to persevere.

One of the most memorable aspects of my internship experience was the daily ritual of lunch breaks. Amidst the hectic pace of our workday, these moments of respite provided a welcome opportunity to unwind, recharge, and connect with my colleagues on a personal level. Gathered around the communal table, we would share stories, laughter, and, of course, food—a simple yet profound expression of camaraderie and solidarity.

These lunchtime gatherings were more than just a chance to refuel our bodies; they were a testament to the power of human connection in cultivating a cohesive and collaborative team dynamic. As we shared meals and exchanged anecdotes, barriers dissolved, and bonds deepened, creating an environment where trust, respect, and mutual support thrived.

Through these interactions, I came to understand that effective teamwork is not merely a product of shared goals and objectives but is rooted in genuine relationships built on empathy, communication, and mutual respect. The sense of camaraderie fostered during these moments extended beyond the lunch table and permeated every aspect of our work, laying the foundation for seamless collaboration and synergy.

Central to my growth during the internship was the realization that confidence is not a static state but rather a dynamic journey. While I may have entered the internship with reservations and uncertainty, I emerged with a newfound sense of self-assurance, grounded in the knowledge that competence is cultivated through experience and perseverance.

Looking back on my internship journey, I am struck by the transformative power of growth and self-discovery. What began as a journey marked by uncertainty and apprehension blossomed into a profound exploration of my capabilities and potential. The technical skills acquired and the professional competencies honed during those three months have not only prepared me for future endeavors but have also instilled within me a sense of purpose and conviction in my chosen path.

As I stand on the precipice of my academic and professional journey, I carry with me the lessons learned and the memories forged during my first-year internship. It was not merely a chapter in my story but rather a foundational cornerstone upon which I will continue to build my career in architecture. With each challenge encountered and each obstacle overcome, I am reminded of the boundless possibilities that await, and the unwavering belief that with dedication and perseverance, anything is attainable.
